Signs of the Upper Class

The intro to this Bravo reality show is nothing but a semiotics analysis. These women are supposed to be the ideal women of Beverly Hills; a town where beauty, money and who you know is power. Different signs indicate that these women are ‘it’ in their town. Their fancy, expensive gowns cost a fortune. Their diamond filled closets next to their designer dresses and shoes are also no cheap buy. These are all signifiers to showcase the signified; women in Beverly Hills are accepted and are successful once they acquire all of these material things. The music is an upbeat and classy tone. This is also to show that the women are a part of a higher society; a type of community where the price of fun is an expensive ticket to a show or the premiere of a move. The same is done with the other ‘Real Housewives’ series featuring other cities. Each sign within each opening is catered to the specific city. These different signifiers are a part of showing the audience the unique characteristics each dominant group of a particular city have, as well as ideologies. Since these women have “so much money and power,” could they be a part of creating ideologies within their communities?
