127 Hours

This weekend I had the privilege of watching 127 Hours starring James Franco. Overall, the film was great and James Franco had an Academy Award worthy performance, however, the film dug a lot deeper than simply a story about a man trapped between a rock and a hard place(literally). The film showcased the struggle of solitude and how important relationships really are no matter how independent one is. However, the real twist comes when Aron Ralston is forced to hit his arm off in order to survive. This ultimately shows that man can survive on his own if he possesses the will to live. The gruesome scene of Franco's character chopping off his appendage truly dives into the psychological strength that it must take in order to do such a thing. He gets this strength by picturing a boy that is his eventual child and a woman who is his eventual wife. This shows how the power of relationships can really affect one's will to survive under the most extreme conditions. All in all, the film shows Ralston's transition from an Independent extremist to a man who values the essential necessity of relationships.

  1. Think about how you can push your blog posts to be a little more critical. How did they communicate his solidarity and determination? Visuals? Narrative? Voiceover? Were there certain tropes used there? Does the movie communicate something particularly American?

  2. I just watched this movie as well, and I was really moved by it. Yes, the main part of the story is that he had to cut off hit own arm, and I think that that's what was advertised most in promoting this movie. But what I learned after watching it was how much he struggled with himself while he was trapped. He completely reevaluated his life and who he was as a person, and found that his life was worth saving. I like that you brought that point up in your blog, because most people only talk about the man's actually physical loss (his arm) rather than his emotional gains from the experience.
